Itinerary

Point by point

  1. 01
    Starting point

    Colosseum

Starting point. Take Metro Line B to Colosseo station and begin the walk at the Colosseum. If you plan to go inside, buy your ticket in advance only from the official website and reserve an entry time; ticket sales normally open 30 days before the visit. Allow 60–90 minutes for the Colosseum. What to bring for the full day: comfortable non-slip shoes for cobblestones and steps, a refillable water bottle, a hat, sunscreen, a light jacket or raincoat depending on the forecast, a charged phone, a power bank, a bank card, and an ID matching the name on your ticket. In summer, start early and drink water regularly. Do not bring large bags or suitcases.

    Walk from Colosseum

    Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

Walk about 500 metres from the Colosseum to an entrance to the archaeological area near Via Sacra or Via di San Gregorio. The walk takes roughly 7–10 minutes. The Forum and Palatine cover a large area with uneven stones, slopes, and very little shade; allow 1.5–2.5 hours. The same combined ticket normally includes the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill, but opening hours and conditions depend on the date. Carry water and a snack, but eat only in permitted areas. Do not sit on ancient structures or leave the marked paths.

Walk from Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

    Piazza del Campidoglio

After leaving the western side of the Forum, head towards Piazza del Campidoglio on Capitoline Hill. From the nearest exit, the uphill walk is about 700–900 metres and takes 15–20 minutes. See Michelangelo’s architectural ensemble and walk to the viewpoint behind Palazzo Senatorio for one of the best views over the Roman Forum. Allow 25–35 minutes here. Then descend the gently sloping Cordonata towards Piazza Venezia.

    Walk from Piazza del Campidoglio

    Pantheon

From Capitoline Hill, walk through Piazza Venezia, Via del Plebiscito, and the narrow streets of the historic centre. The distance is about 1.2 kilometres and takes 18–25 minutes. Watch for scooters and use marked pedestrian crossings. The Pantheon is both a monument and an active church: wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, keep your voice down, and check the current ticket procedure before visiting. A visit inside usually takes 30–45 minutes. This is a convenient area for lunch, but avoid restaurants with aggressive touts and check the priced menu before ordering.

    Walk from Pantheon

    Trevi Fountain

Walk about 900 metres from the Pantheon via Piazza di Pietra and Via del Tritone; the journey takes 12–18 minutes. The fountain is almost always crowded, so keep your phone, wallet, and documents in a closed bag in front of you and never leave belongings on the stone edges. Do not enter the water, and follow temporary barriers and instructions from city staff. Allow 20–30 minutes. Refill your bottle only from Rome’s public drinking fountains, known as nasoni, never from the decorative fountain basin.

    Walk from Trevi Fountain

    Spanish Steps

Final section: walk from the Trevi Fountain along Via della Stamperia and Via dei Due Macelli to Piazza di Spagna. It is about 750 metres and takes 10–15 minutes. Sitting or picnicking on the steps is prohibited, and the passage must remain clear. Walk up to the church of Trinità dei Monti for the panorama, or finish at Spagna station on Metro Line A. The complete itinerary takes approximately 6–8 hours including attraction visits, food, and breaks. The direct route is about 5 kilometres, but walking inside the Forum and Palatine Hill adds considerably more. In extreme heat, heavy rain, or with limited mobility, shorten the archaeological section and use public transport.
