A technicolor geothermal geyser accidentally created in 1964 when a well was drilled and never properly capped. Thermophilic algae colonized the calcium carbonate mounds in impossible shades of green, red, and orange.
In 1964, a well-drilling company punched into a geothermal pocket in the Black Rock Desert of northern Nevada and struck hot water. They capped the well improperly. Over the following years, superheated water found its way through the inadequate seal, emerged at the surface, and began depositing dissolved minerals as it cooled. A cone grew. Then a second cone. Then a third. Decades later, the formation — now known as Fly Geyser — stands as three distinct mounds perpetually erupting, perpetually building, perpetually colonized by thermophilic algae in colors that resist description in terms of ordinary landscape.
The colors are alive. Thermophilic algae — organisms that thrive in temperatures between 40 and 70°C — coat the calcium carbonate and silica structures in what photographs render as psychedelic greens, reds, and oranges, and what in person reads as something more vivid and more implausible than photographs suggest. The algae are not a fixed decoration. They are biological communities that shift and expand with the mineral deposits. The formation grows several centimeters each year, adding to all three cones simultaneously. It is not a finished object. It is in the process of becoming something that does not yet exist.
The water emerges at approximately 93°C and immediately begins to lose heat and mineral saturation. Multiple distinct pools of mineral-rich water surround the cones at various temperatures, each supporting different algal communities based on their thermal range. The largest pool, adjacent to the main cone, is too hot for most algae at the inflow and progressively cooler and more colonized toward its margins. The mineral terracing around the pools shows the same calcium carbonate layering as the main cones — the same process at a smaller scale, progressing toward the same result over longer time.
Fly Geyser is located on a 3,800-acre property called Fly Ranch, approximately 110 kilometers north of Reno in Washoe County. The Burning Man Project — which operates the annual Burning Man event on the Black Rock Desert playa nearby — purchased the property in 2016 from the previous private owner and has since opened it to limited guided public access. Before 2016, the only people who saw Fly Geyser were those who trespassed. The shift from inaccessible private curiosity to managed public site has made it possible for a wider audience to visit while keeping visitor numbers low enough to preserve the geothermal and ecological integrity of the site.
For most of its known history, Fly Geyser was photographed from the fence line by passing highway travelers and from helicopters by photographers who obtained aerial permission. The images that circulated — saturated, improbable, alien — seemed to most viewers like CGI or manipulation. They were accurate. The place looks like what the photographs show: a geyser system on another planet, built by an industrial accident and kept alive by geothermal water and time. The accident created it. The life colonized it. The desert preserved it. The most alien landscape in Nevada is in Nevada because someone didn't cap a well properly in 1964.
